Moradabad, May 17, 2022: In a complex surgery, doctors at Ujala Cygnus Brightstar Hospital, Moradabad saved the right hand of a 14-year-old boy who had almost lost it due to a severe injury. The injury had caused loss of movement in the hand due to artery and nerve damage.
Dr Anil Rajput, Head of Plastic Surgery Department, and his efficient team of doctors immediately examined the patient and found that he had suffered a radial artery injury. A major artery was cut along with other structures like the median nerve, apart from multiple tendons that help in finger movement. It was a medical emergency which required immediate action to restore normal hand function.
The patient, Mohd. Zuhaib from Moradabad, was brought to the emergency at midnight on April 15 with a severely injured right hand. The paleness in his hand made it difficult to determine whether it would survive. He was admitted to emergency care, and Dr Anil Rajput examined him at 2:45 AM. A proper diagnosis was made, and surgery was planned and performed after 5 hours. During this time, the patient was kept nil by mouth.
“The boy came to our hospital in a painful condition. We immediately took him to the OT and started the operation at 9 AM the next day. All damaged structures were repaired, including the right radial artery, right median nerve, and nearly 10 different flexor tendons that help in finger movement. Immediately after surgery, his hand became vascular, meaning the paleness turned pink, and the hand survived due to restored blood flow,” said Dr Rajput, who has more than 20 years of experience in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has performed over 12,000 surgeries.
The timely medical intervention helped save the boy’s hand while restoring its function and viability. In such cases, the chances of saving a hand are low, and reconstructing damaged vessels is usually successful only if the patient is brought within one hour of injury.
